Research and Planning: LOCATION!

I'm finally positive on the whereabouts of my pictures. I am going to use Hyde Park for my main image for the main cover of Sally. I will have her all rocked up with her clothes and attitude strong. Then for the double page spread, because it's snowing I will have her sat down with her guitar looking very fragile to go with the interview of her showing us the real her. Then, on the double page spread I will also have two pictures of her in the music studio at college recording, back to her normal self.
As for the contents page, I will use the band stand at Hyde Park for a couple of them.
I will have to do this soon as I love the winter affect with the snow at the moment.

This is what I want to complete this week:

*I want to complete the location recces
*I want to have a final idea of my location for the main model since my idea didn't turn out well since they are putting on a Pantomime in the theatre.

Research and Planning: Publication Plan

Research & Planning: My interview With My Main Model

* How old were you when you realized that singing was something you wanted to do as a career?
My mother constantly played rock music when I was a child and I remember that I used to sing along and it just started from there.

*What artist would you say has had the biggest impact on you and has been your biggest inspiration and why?
Hayley Williams from Paramore. She has the most powerful voice! She's a great role model for young girls and puts so much honesty into her lyrics.

Is rock your favourite genre of music? If not, why do yo think you based your career around that?

I would say rock was. However, I do like other genre's. I listen to rap a lot as I think they speak the truth which is something I love in an artist.

Who's concert was the first that you ever went to see as a child?
Avril Lavigne was my first gig. It was the Best Damn Thing Tour. I was standing and I ended up getting hit in the mosh pit; It was awesome!

What would say your favourite part of being a current music artist and why?

The live shows, the fans go crazy! I love that fans come to appreciate my music and also have fun whilst listening to it.

Do you prefer performing live at a concert then, or working in a recording studio?

Both. Working in a studio is fun because you can experiment with your voice and change different problems. On the other hand when your doing a concert you get to run around and the audience gets to see the real you.

What made you want to sing solo rather than sing in a band?
Being in a band is fun but you can have disagreements and fall out so I think that when you sing solo it's easier to portray your personal feelings.

Where do you get your inspiration from when you're writing your songs?
I get my inspiration from my life experiences and friends lives. I like to write about the truth and give my fans my honesty.

How was it, growing up with people treating you differently? Did you miss your normal life at all?
Well I never enjoyed school. I never fit in as the other girls called me as I hung around with boys. I was always a tomboy, I never wanted to play with dolls. Haha.

What instruments do you play and how old were you when you first started? What made you want to start?
My mum found her acoustic guitar and I found it amazing! My sister also played piano and I picked that up from her. Then eventually I started playing the drum and bass.

Who's your closest famous friend and how did you meet?
Taylor Momson from the band 'The Pretty Wreckless.' We were at a film premiere a few years ago and just hit off from there. She's one of the funniest people ever!!

What's the nicest thing one of your fans has ever done for you?
When my picture was leaked. A fan was tweeting messages of support to my family and myself. He also made 10 facebook groups to support me.I appreciated that as he showed his love for me and made me feel like I wasn't alone.

Research and Planning: My first ISHOWU movie clip

This is my first ishowu movie clip. It shows me creating the questions for my interview

Research and Planning: Interview questions draft

These are the questions that I will be including in my double page spread.

Research and Planning: Rough Plan For This Week

This is a rough plan for my work this week. I am going to try and:

*Write a rough draft of the interview questions I will be including in my double page spread
*Write a rough draft of the welcome message that I will be including on my contents page
*Write a rough draft of the stories I will be including on my contents page.

BY DOING THIS I WILL DOING A LOT OF WORK WHICH WILL HELP ME WHEN I START TO PUT EVERYTHING TOGETHER. By having the story already written out it will just be a matter of copy and pasting it onto Indesign.

This is the basic outline of what I want to achieve this week.

Research And Planning: Location

Some of the places I was thinking of using for shooting my images for my magazine were:

* The green room at college. This is because there is a lot of equipment in there, associating to music. For example; mikes, stands, sound booths, a recording studio area and also there are lights that able you to light up specific parts of your shot.

* Hyde Park. This is because it's a vast area. There is also a large bandstand which gives the audience a band feel to it. The problem with this idea though is that there would be a lot of risks. For example, the weather, animals, people, making sure that the props don't get damaged on the way etc.

* Victoria Park In Denton. My reason for considering this is the same as the one for Hyde Park as there is yet again a band stand there although the park itself isn't very big. If I decided to go with the outdoor aspect I would have to decide whether I was going to take the pictures in college time or my own because Hyde Park is right near college and Victoria Park is right near home.

* The Theatre At College. I love this idea! This is because, it's ideal. The theatre is a minute walk from our media room and it has lots of equipment in there that would be usual for my picture taking. Also there is a lighting box at the top which I will be able to use and by doing it on a stage, it will give it a concert kind of feel to it. I think I am going to use this idea but I will have to fill out a risk assessment out.

Research And Planning: Album Covers

In this blog, it will increase the knowledge I have for the design of rock magazines. The basic design of a magazine and the basic design of an album cover can be quite alike. This is because they both have details that are similar.

For example in one of Linkin Park's album colours, greys, reds and black are associated with them which will help me if I decide to have a band like Linkin Park in my magazine. By listening to Linkin Park, I know that they can be quite heavy rock. As a result of this, their cover is quite messy and the writing, although it's clear, its slightly distorted as well.

In comparison to the previous comment I have made about the heaviness of the band this album cover backs it up. By this I mean... Paramore is more like pop/punk rock which results in it being more toned down to something like linkin park. We can tell that the designer of this album knows this because they have used brighter colours in the image and the font is quite normal and simple.

By researching these it has helped me understand that the harshness of colours I use in my magazine depends on the kind of band I am going to use.

Research and Planning: Model Head Shots

In this blog I'm going to test different people out taking head shots of them.

I won't be using this model. This is because, the hairstyle she has and the way she looks makes her look like someone you would see in a pop magazine.

I won't be using this model either, the clothes she wears are very bright which contrasts with the colours in a rock magazine.

I won't be using this model. This is because he doesn't fit in with the type of magazine I'm doing.
I will not be using this model. This is because she looks like she would be found in a Indie or Pop magazine.
I may use this model. This is because the darkness of her eyes make her stand out which is similar to the research I did of different artists and bands. She also has two piercings which makes her have a more rocky feel to her. Also if she was holding a guitar she would look very comfortable on stage.

This model is too old for my target audience. I like the colours she's wearing though as its similar to rock artists clothing.

I won't be using this model because he looks too sporty to be put into a rock magazine. In this image he also looks like you'd find him in a dance magazine, especially if he wore different clothing

This is a good model for a rock magazine but in this image he doesn't look dark enough. On the other hand; I may decide to use him.

I like this image. I may use this model but I would have to ask him to wear something darker as the checkered shirt makes him look quite indie looking.

I wont be using this model. From his hairsyle and face he reminds me of someone I would see in a country magazine with a guitar in the countryside.

This model is too brightly dressed in this image. She looks like she would appear in a pop magazine because of the pink and white clothes and the pose she is doing. Overall; she looks very fashionable which is the complete opposite effect that I want the audience to think when they see my artists and bands.

I quite like these two images. Mainly because the model I have used is good. The clothing he is wearing is quite dark so I can imagine that it will work putting him in black. His hairstyle is unusal and something you would imagine in a punk/rock band. Also the pose he is doing works with his image.

I am going to use this model because she just has her own style and she looks ideal to portray a rock singer. The colours she is wearing go well with her overall image.

I love this image. She looks really vulnerable in this photo and I personally think it comes over really well! But from knowing this model and seeing what she wears day to day, I also think she will look really good dressed up portraying the rock artist look. I will use this model as my main cover model and also include her on my double page spread.
I like the thought of using this model because she has a good face for a rock magazine. Her eyes stand out because of her bold eyeliner which adds to the rock image which I like!! I think I will use this model on my contents page.

Research And Planning: Finding Artists Associated To Rock Music

This blog shows me looking on the internet, searching for sites that state the top rock bands around at the moment.

By doing this, it gives a larger variety of artists to look at when seeing what would be most appropriate for my artist on the front cover to look like.

Research And Planning: An Artists Appearance: Hair & Other

In this blog I am going to be analysing what artists hair style and colour are like and what other things strike us as viewers when looking at them for the first time and makes them stand out. For example; tattoo's, piercings etc.

NAIL POLISH AND HAIR COLOUR

In this image of Hayley Williams whom is the lead singer of the band Paramore, you can't tell very well, but she is wearing black nail polish. I think the purpose of this is that it makes her appear more dark since people now associate black nail polish with punk rockers and goths which sort of blends in with the kind of music she performs. This could also be thought of as a way to express peoples feelings. In addition to this, Hayley has bright ginger hair which makes us take notice of her straight away and with wearing black most of the time, it produces even more emphasis on her appearance.

HAIR STYLE

This is an image of the band 'My Chemical Romance.' Each member's hair is very dark in colour and the style is very messy. Some of the members have spiked hair which makes it stand out where the others aren't as noticeable but they haven't all been done to perfection like you would expect on an airbrushed picture of Cheryl Cole or Britney Spears in a pop magazine.

             TATTOO

In this image of Green Day, you can see that they have large tattoo's on there arm. This shows that they are different and it's basically a way to make an impression. You wouldnt see someone like Miley Cyrus with something like that pasted up her arm in a Pop magazine and I think that they do this to show people who they really are and to say that they aren't afraid to show it.

Research and Planning: Final designs For Masthead

I've decided to use the name 'Rock Bound' for my masthead name. I will now experiment different fonts for the name on Photoshop.

Something that I realised with this type of font is that the original black and white theme that I liked probably will not work since I maybe using a lot of black on the background of my front cover. Therefore in the above image, as you can see I have used the idea of red as well within the masthead. The other alternative to this is not using a black background in my final design.

I will now look at different fonts.

Research And Planning: Equipment And Software List

The equipment that I am going to use is quite simple. By having a clear idea now of what I will need, it will help me later on and will make me be prepared.

The props I'm thinking of using, according to the research I've been doing are:

* Photoshop to do my front cover and part of my double page spread.

*Indesign to do my contents page and the other part of my double page spread.

*Perhaps a microphone in a stand.

*Perhaps a guitar to show the rock star view of the artist

*The apple macs

*A Digital camera to take my images

*A video camera to take the location video.

Research And Planning: Props

The props that artists use in concerts, photo shoots, album covers etc are very important as they sum the band genre up as a whole. By this I mean that if you see a woman sat at a piano with a microphone, you can guess as a first impression that she will be a classical singer. Where as for a rock band you would expect to see an electric guitar followed by a bass guitar.

Props: Instuments
GREEN DAY
This picture of Green Day is a good example of what I mean about props. For instance; two of the singers are loosely holding guitars that are darkly coloured. Something I've noticed about rock artists they don't hold their guitars in a fixed position; they kind of tilt it to give it that casual kind of approach to the band.

PARAMORE
In this photo of Paramore there is again a guitar being used. Something you can tell by looking at the artists appearance and also the appearance of the instruments being used. For example, for the heavier rock like green day the scene is more serious and the camera angle is a low, giving the people looking at the image a higher view of the band. Whereas with this picture of Paramore the slight low angle here isn't as extreme which gives them a more calm and more relaxed approach to them. Also the guitar used in this image isn't all black.

LINKIN PARK

This image of Linkin Park is very crowded. You can see the drummer in the background which is another instrument I have found is associated with heavy and sometimes mild rock music. Again the picture is very dark, with most of it being in black, including the main image on the drum kit.

Props: Microphones

PARAMORE
In this image Hayley Williams has used a wired microphone during one of her concerts. By doing this I think having the lead gives her something to hold onto with her other hand and makes her look comfortable on stage with her mike. Also it gives her oppotunity to move around the stage easier without having a mike stand to be worring about.

GOOD CHARLOTTE

In this image Good Charlotte have used a wireless microphone. From looking at images of Good Charlotte and analysing them I know that they are a rock band and a bit more heavier than Paramore because of the clothes that they wear and the background of images when in concert or doing photoshoots. I think that they have used a wireless mike to just be more comfortable when on stage. Something I've noticed though is that when the male artists use their microphone, they are using gestures with their other hand.

NICKELBACK

On the other hand, for artists like Nickelback he uses a microphone in a stand. The main reason for this is because he also plays the guitar while singing so this makes it easier for him when doing concerts.

Research And Planning: An Artists Appearance

In this blog I'm going to be researching and analysing different artists outfits. By doing this and having a clearer insight this will help when I'm doing my photography for my own music magazine.

PARAMORE
In a lot of the images I've seen of Paramore, all members have worn dark colours; greys, blacks, reds and occasionally some white. After saying this Hayley, who is the lead singer of the band still stands out. In the above picture they have done this by the guys wearing black and grey but having Hayley wearing something a little brighter. As a result of this, as soon as fans see Hayley on a magazine or in a advertisement, they will know that it has something to do with Paramore. Purposely having a way of making the audience remember the band is the best way to get noticed.
GOOD CHARLOTTE
Good Charlotte also wear mainly black when they have pictures taken of them. In the above image there is a bit of contrast. For example; although they are wearing dark colours and they look like a rock band, they also have a smart approach to them by wearing ties and tank tops which will appeal to a wider range of people. This contrast of appearance makes them look more interesting and will draw members of the public in.
NICKELBACK
In the above picture Nickelback have a strict colour scheme for their clothing. They are all wearing black which, according to my questionnaire, is the most expected colour to be associated with rock music. It makes them look darker and more mysterious. The dark tattoo on the guys arm also makes them seem like the opposite kind of artist to someone you would see in a pop magazine.

LINKIN PARK
This is a picture of Linkin Park. Straight away you can see that they aren't part of a country or pop group because of the darkness and seriousness of the image. Their clothes are a range between blacks, greys, whites and a hint of light blue, almost as if the bright blue sky is reflecting onto their clothing. As a result of this, it makes them look serious but approachable.

GREEN DAY
This picture is from the band Green Day. In comparison with Good Charlotte, although they are wearing all black and white which gives them a dark rock look, they are also wearing a suit and ties which make them look more appealing and more formal, resulting in people having more respect for them and a wider range of people becoming interested in them.

Research And Planning: Artists

Since when doing my questionnaire about what artists people in my class associated rock music with I have decided to use the results from that to research further into each individual artist. Things I might want to look into are:

* The costumes they wear
* What hairstyles/ accessories they have
* Any specific equipment used whilst performing
* Details about their fans:  - Their appearance
                                        - Age
                                        - Gender
                                        - What other bands they are into
* The colours used to associate the band
* What their album covers look like
* How their concerts are advertised

Research and Planning: Production Schedule

This is my production schedule. By doing this, it will help me over the next few weeks and will inform me of what I need to complete each week.
