Reseach And Planning : Contents Page Analysis

This is the rock contents page I am going to be annotating.

Genre
*The genre of this magazine is rock.
*The colours are very basic; black and white mainly with a contrast of yellow of the writing which suggests darkness and mystery.
* You can also tell that its a rock magazine from the layout and representation.

Target Audience
* This contents page would be aimed at the younger generation that were into rock music and finding out the latest gossip and information out about their favourite artists. Therefore they would be in the social economic group E.
* Most of the people could be male or female as its not based towards either gender.
* Since its aimed at the younger generation ( and you can tell this by the artists displayed eg fall out boy, kids in glass houses etc) most of the population will still be in education.

Layout
* The layout appears quite simple. There aren't mass blocks of information all together so it helps when trying to read.
*I like the idea of having a mixed variety of pictures at the bottom with sneak preview stories because it immediately gives you a quicker insight of whats in the magazine. By doing this it also splits the text up and makes the contents page look more inviting.
* It has a welcome message at the top of the contents page which is the biggest block of text on the page.
* Overall all the information and pictures are spread out evenly which creates a good balance when looking at it.

Representation
* The edges of the page are distorted in a way which is something you wouldnt find in a pop magazine or country magazine.
* Some of the pictures that are used have a rock guitar in the image to suggest the heavyness of the music of the difference in rhythm in comparison with other genres
* The clothes the people in the pictures are wearing aren't smart. They are very simple and casual and dark.
* The hair cuts of the people are also very messy, which suggests the rock style, in comparison to the airbrushed people we see in, for example, a pop magazine.

Media Language
* The largest image used is a medium long shot, letting the people viewing it see a lot of the singers body and the audience behind.
* Some of the images have been used with a low angle as well, showing the band member in a light where people look up to them.
* A few close ups have also been used to show the expression on their faces and to get a better feel of the band and the rock theme.

Research And Planning : Inspiration For Masthead Name

* Fusion - I like this name but I think that it sounds more like a pop name than a rock one. Maybe if I destort the writing, it'll work but that's something I will test at a later date.

* Break I like this name because I feel like I can add a lot of distraught to the writing.

* Cold Night - I like this name because it sounds dark as soon as you read it and also because I could use black, red and white to my advantage

* Rock Out - I like this name because it's straight to the point but I think it might be a bit too plain and basic.

*Abusive - I think that this name might be a bit too violent, esspecially since people as young as 13 year old could read it.

*Rockbound - I like this name because it gives it a funky kind of effect to it.

Research And Planning : My Target Audience

* Age - The age group that I will be aiming my music magazine at teenagers slash young adults between 13-23 years old. From the research off the internet and in my questionnaire the people who listen to pop/rock are of a younger generation
* Gender - My music magazine will be for both female and male teenagers as in my questionnaire both genders seem to be into rock/pop magazines.
* Occupation - Because the audience I am aiming my magazine at are people at high school/college and university, a wide majority of the people will only have a part time job at the most.
* Class - In the social economic grouping system, most of the people will be E/D (students/unskilled workers) since most of the people will be still in education.
* Wealth - This would tie in with their class. If they had a job then they'd have money coming in where as if they didn't, maybe they wouldn't be able to afford certain magazines.
* Interests - A lot of the people who filled in my magazine seemed to like rock music. People who would like my magazine would probably be interested in gigs and news about rock artists and concerts. Most of the people who did my questionnaire voted that they would want to see upcoming albums most in a magazine.
* Outlook for future - Most of the people that would read my magazine would most likely want to carry on being in education and maybe get a part time job. Some may want to per sue a career in music by playing/singing etc.

This is a image of a girl that would be stereotyped as being into rock.

Research And Planning : Analysis Of Music Cover 2

This is the second magazine that I am going to analyse.

Audience:
* This magazine is based at teenagers around 14-20 like my previous magazine, again being in a E in the Social Economic Grouping System.
* With Paramore being the lead story on the magazine the first assumption would be that this magazine was bias slightly towards being more something girls would read rather than guys.
* Teenagers that like to catch up with the latest rock gossip and interviews would enjoy reading this magazine. Also paramore fans would immediately want to buy it, as well as people interested with the rest of the artists on the cover.

Representation And Layout:
* The designer of this magazine has purposely used the band paramore (a well known rock/punk) band on the front of it to get the audiences attention.
* The image is large and centred in the middle of the page to emphasise the genre and the information inside.
* The expressions on each of there faces show that its a rock magazine. This is because if it was a pop one, the artists on the front usually stand pouting or smiling at the camera where as in this case, the people act more confident.
* The masthead is positioned behind the image. This might have been done because of the importance of the image; but as a result of this the masthead is difficult to read suggesting mystery and a contrast to most other genres of music.
*The stories and writing that are included are purposely scattered around the image, making it the main focus of the magazine and directly emphasising it as much as possible.
*The shot type used is a medium closeup. This is so that we can focus on there faces clearly but also see what their wearing.

Genre:
*The genre of this music magazine is rock/punk
* You can tell this by the colours used; the main ones being red, black and white which were the most voted colours in my questionnaire to be associated with rock magazines.
* Also unlike in a pop magazine, this one has some area's of distortion in there.
* The designer has purposely used one of the most well known current rock/punk bands around to get people immediately facinated in it.

Media Language:
*The peace sign gesture that Hayley makes with her hand suggests the rockish/ punkrocker that she is. This shows the freedom of speech and confidence/ fearlessness that the group have.
*The males in the group are all wearing black and very dark colours which associates to rock where as Hayley in the middle has red on which gives it a bit of colour. By doing this is emphasises her which is what the designer wants.

Research And Planning : Analysis Of Music Cover 1

This is my first rock magazine that I am going to be analysing.

Audience:
*This magazine is aimed at both male and female readers although at first glimpse it looks more like a guy magazine
*This is because of the colours used and because the artists used are all male.
*The people who would read this would most likely be in the age group 14-20 and be E in the Social Economic Grouping system.
*An interest in rock music and catching up with the latest gossip would be common in the teenagers who would buy this.

Representation:
*The designer of this magazine has used a well known music artist; the lead singer of Green Day which is good since a wide variety of people who like rock music will immediately notice the magazine.
* You can instantly tell that the artist is a rock star from guitar and colours used, also from the scruffy rugged impression we get from him.
*Since he isn't dressed very smartly, we can tell that his music makes an impression and they aren't really serious.

Genre:
*There are many ways in which we can see that this is a rock magazine. An obvious one to start with is the colour of most of the magazine. Using the colour black it instantly is stereotyped as being a colour for a rock magazine. The results from my questionnaire back up this argument.
* Also the masthead has a distorted effect with it to suggest the rhythm of the music.
*Using Slipknot as another band on the front cover also insinuates the genre to rock fans. By using well known rock groups it makes the magazine stand out a lot more, resulting in people buying it more.
*The colours of the writing are all kept quite simple; using blues, white, black, green and yellow. This suggests to the reader that although its rock, it isn't REALLY heavy as it has some colour in there.

Layout:
*The layout of the picture is very large which makes it stand out on the page. Its a mid shot and slightly looks up at the artist which shows the popularity of him.
*The masthead is centre aligned and is positioned behind the picture but is still readable for the audience.
*The main story is situated in the middle of the page in larger writing to make it stand out and be noticed compared to the smaller stories towards the bottom of the page.

Media Language:
*Using a guitar and the picture of how he is holding it immediately shows the reader that the genre is going to be rockish; louder music with a heavier beat to it compared to pop.
*He's also wearing all black which suggests a darker atmosphere. This is similar to the fact that he is wearing black thick eyeliner which puts a rock dark impression on him.

Research And Planning: Audience Feedback For Music Magazine

This is the questionnaire I have created for my class to complete. By doing this it will help me when creating my music magazine because I'll have ideas and preferences ready for using.
Once I had my results back from my class, I went onto Powerpoint and created a pie chart to record them. By doing this I found out that when talking about a variety of different genres/music magazines, the results were quite varied. On the hand when talking about the specific genre of I got a mixed but larger opinion of peoples preference. I found out that people liked hiphop, indie and rock music the most and that everyone agreed with the artists I had wrote down to compare with my rock magazine. I lastly found out that most people my age associate black and red the most to rock magazines so therefore when I start to do my rock magazine I will focus the front cover, contents page and double page spread around them colours. Also most of the people that I asked who were into Rock music were of a young age, which means that I will make my magazine quite current and stylish to attract more people. In addition to the rock idea, all of the bands I put in my questionaire were considered and agreed by at least a couple of people that they can be classed as a rock group.
